What Could Be Better than Chores?

The word chore brings to mind work! Not the fun kind either, just the work we have to get done to get through our day. There is nothing wrong with that but for my children the word chore did not get the response or the attitude I wanted my children to have when they were doing their work. So I changed our chores to our "daily achievements".

Everyone likes to achieve something with their days and my children, and I'm sure your children, do also. I made sure each of them understood what it means to achieve. According to Merriam-Webster it is "to gain by work or effort", and that is just what I wanted them to know. In order to gain they must work or put an effort forth and that would result in them achieving what they set out to do.

The gain for their effort is no more than it was before, it's just worded in a way that avoids the feeling of dread they were displaying about chores. Now they don't see it as another chore they just have to do, but a small goal they will achieve for the day.

I made a "Daily Achievements Chart" that hangs on the fridge for them to look at everyday and it tells each child what they need to achieve that day. Things such as cleaning their room, feeding the cat and dog, and sweeping are listed and they changed from child to child everyday. I no longer ask if they have done their chores. Instead the question is "What have you achieved today?".

Free Homeschool Resources

I just found a wonderful resource for creating a mini-office for my kids. A mini-office puts the information they need, such as math tables or writing checklist, right in front of them.
